From examining evidence to developing new systems, IT Specialists play a critical role in keeping the FBI running smoothly. IT Specialists fall into two career paths: IT Specialist (General) and IT Specialist – Forensic Examiner (ITS–FE).
As an IT Specialist, you’ll help FBI employees solve critical issues and enable them to get the job done. You’ll be a critical resource on technology and information, and will configure, analyze, adapt, and develop new processes and systems to ensure the FBI’s technical capabilities continue to improve. Educational Requirements
To qualify as an IT Specialist or an ITS – FE, you must have an undergraduate, graduate, or post-doctoral degree in one of the following areas:
- Computer Science
- Software Engineering
- Information Science, Information Systems, or Information Systems Management
- Mathematics
- Operations Research
- Statistics
- Technology Management
Locations
As part of the application, candidates are asked to select their desired locations. Assignments are based on the needs of the FBI, and not all locations may have openings for certain positions. Candidates are encouraged to select as many locations as desired.
IT Specialist and ITS – FE positions are primarily located in major cities (New York, Boston, San Francisco, etc.), and especially at the FBI’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. Candidates may be contacted if their skills are a fit for locations similar to or near ones they’ve selected.
Automatic Disqualifiers
To apply, you must meet all Eligibility requirements located on our Employment Eligibility page. You will be automatically disqualified, and should not submit an application, if you meet any of the following criteria:
- You are not a US Citizen (born or naturalized).
- You have been convicted of a felony.
- You have used illegal drugs in violation of the FBI Employment Drug Policy.
- You have defaulted on a student loan insured by the US government.
- You have failed an FBI-administered urinalysis drug test.
- You have failed to register with the Selective Service System (males only — exceptions apply. Please click here to view exceptions.)
Key Requirements
- You must have graduated or will be graduating between December 2015 and September 2018; (Veterans: Between December 2011 and September 2018).
- You must have a graduating GPA of no less than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. If your school does not provide a GPA, you must meet one of the following alternate criteria:
- SAT: 1500 out of 2400, or 1000 out of 1600 (most recent SATs).
- ACT: 21 or higher.
- Must be able to obtain a Top-Secret security clearance.
- Selectees must undergo and successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation as a condition of employment. Prior to the initiation of a background investigation, you’ll be required to pass a polygraph examination and a drug test. The background investigation will include a check of your credit history and criminal record, as well as interviews with prior employers, references, co-workers, personal associates, family members, and friends. You may be disqualified from selection or removed from employment based on information obtained during this background investigation.
Please note that if you meet any of the automatic disqualifiers or don't meet the key requirements, you are not eligible for employment with the FBI.
